About Berry Best Smoothies

In the summer of 1993, after a day of hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park with some friends, I suggested we stop in Estes Park for something cold to drink.  We decided on a local juice bar and ordered smoothies.  The beverages we drank on the way back to Boulder were less than satisfactory and after a brief conversation about my experience making smoothies in college at the University of Florida the genesis of an idea to sell "good" smoothies in Boulder was born.  I loved going down to the Pearl Street Mall and noticed that there were a few food vendors selling good street food but no one selling beverages.  After some inquiries I found out how to apply for a vendors license on the mall.  It would be several months before the annual application process so I decided in the meantime to look for other possible locations.  Another favorite spot was the Boulder Farmers Market.  Again, no one was selling smoothies or healthy type drinks there either.  I made an application for the farmers market for the next season.  In short order within a few months I was approved at both locations and soon followed with a third location at the University Memorial Center (student union) on campus.  For the next 12 years I pushed and rolled my carts around and became a staple in the Boulder community with my all fruit smoothies.  Back then there weren't any big franchises selling smoothies so I was THE smoothie guy in town.

In the winter of 2006 while getting my haircut at the Northside Barber Shop on Arapahoe and Folsom I noticed that one of the franchise smoothie shops next door that had come along in the intervening years had closed.  It was at that moment that I knew it was time to move my operation inside and expand my offerings.  We opened our doors on my birthday, June 13, 2006 and it’s been a continuing success since then.  As we approach the end of our fourth year with the Berry Best Smoothie and Juice Bar Café we continue to grow.  More and more menu items (see all our menus) and a growing gluten free selection.

As for the carts, as my attention has been given to the store I have decided to focus my vending cart operations to the Farmers Market only. We will be starting our 17th year at the market in April.  We look forward to continuing there for many years to come as well as nurturing our little neighborhood store and making it a favorite destination for many of our loyal customers.  Stop by and say hello.  I'm at the store or the Farmers Market most every day.  Thank you Boulder for 16 years of supporting a locally owned business.
